กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้ว ที่หมู่บ้านแห่งหนึ่ง ที่มีเศรษฐี ชื่อ ภาติกะ มีอาชีพจับปลา มีภรรยา 2 คน คนแรกชื่อขนิษฐา ผู้มีจิตใจดี อ่อนโยน มีลูกสาวแสนสวย เรียบร้อยเหมือนแม่ ชื่อ เอื้อย ส่วนคนที่สองชื่อ ขนิษฐี เป็นผู้มีจิตริษยาอาฆาต มารยาสาไถ ยุแหย่สามีให้เกลียด นางขนิษฐา และลูกสาวตลอดเวลา มีลูกสาวนิสัยเหมือนแม่ 2 คนชื่ออ้าย กับอี่ วันหนึ่งเศรษฐีภาติกะพาขนิษฐาไปจับปลาในคลอง ไม่ว่าจะเหวี่ยงแหไปกี่ครั้งก็ได้มาเพียงปลาบู่ทองที่ตั้งท้องตัวเดียวเท่านั้น จนกระทั่งพลบค่ำเศรษฐีก็ตัดสินใจที่จะเอาปลาบู่ทองที่จับได้เพียงตัวเดียวกลับบ้าน ทว่าขนิษฐาผู้เป็นภรรยาเกิดความสงสารปลาบู่ ขอให้เศรษฐีปล่อยปลาไป เศรษฐีมีความเกลียดชังเป็นทุนอยู่แล้วจึงโมโหคว้าพายได้ ก็ฟาดจนนางขนิษฐาสลบ และผลักตกน้ำจมตาย เมื่อกลับถึงบ้านเอื้อยก็ถามหาแม่ เศรษฐีจึงตอบไปว่าแม่ของเอื้อยได้หนีตามผู้ชายไป และจะไม่กลับมาบ้านอีกแล้ว นับตั้งแต่วันนั้นเอื้อยจึงถูก 3 แม่ลูกกลั่นแกล้งทรมานด้วยการใช้ทำงานอย่างหนักไม่หยุดไม่หย่อน ไม่ได้พักไม่ได้ผ่อนตลอดทั้งวัน เอื้อยคิดถึงแม่มากจึงมักไปนั่งร้องไห้อยู่ริมท่าน้ำ และได้พบกับปลาบู่ทองซึ่งเป็นนางขนิษฐากลับชาติมาเกิด เมื่อเอื้อยรู้ว่าปลาบู่ทองเป็นแม่ของตนก็ได้นำข้าวสวยและรำมาโปรยให้ปลาบู่ทองกิน และมาปรับทุกข์ให้ปลาบู่ทองฟังทุกวัน นางขนิษฐีและลูกสาวเห็นเอื้อยดูมีความสุขขึ้น เมื่อถูกกลั่นแกล้งก็อดทนไม่ปริปากบ่นจึงไปแอบสืบจนพบว่านางขนิษฐาได้มาเกิดเป็นปลาบู่ทอง และได้พบกับเอื้อยทุกวัน
